Monte Cristo Sandwich
A Monte Cristo sandwich is a rich, indulgent sandwich made with ham, cheese (often Swiss), and sometimes turkey, dipped in egg batter and pan-fried or deep-fried—almost like a savory version of French toast.
The Monte Cristo sandwich is widely believed to be an American twist on the French Croque Monsieur, which dates back to early 20th-century Paris cafés. By the mid-1900s, especially in places like California, cooks began dipping the sandwich in egg and frying it. It gained major popularity in the U.S. through restaurants and even theme parks like Disneyland, where it became a signature dish.
If you love comfort food with a twist, the Monte Cristo is worth trying at least once. It’s crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside, and surprisingly balanced with that sweet finish. Give it a shot in your own kitchen—you might just discover a new favorite brunch or weekend treat!

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 3- 5 minutes
Yield: 2 sandwiches
Ingredients:
4 slices of sandwich bread
120 g DuBreton Organic Ham, sliced
60 g Swiss Cheese/Gruyere Cheese or any other well melting cheese, sliced
2 tbsp unsalted butter
1 large egg
2 tbsp milk
olive oil for the griddle/fry pan
Instructions:
Spread the tops of the bread slices with butter.
Place the ham and cheese slices on one of the pieces of bread. Top remaining slice of bread, buttered side down. Repeat the same for the second sandwich.
Beat the eggs and milk together to form a batter.
Dip the sandwich in the batter until it is completely coated and the liquid has partially soaked into the bread.
Cook on a hot, lightly oiled griddle or pan until the first side is golden, then flip. Use medium-high heat so it browns without burning and the cheese has melted inside 3-5 minutes per side.
Cut the sandwich in half and serve immediately.
